Klagenfurt is a home to many castles. In fact, there are some 23 well-kept castles in the region. Several of them are privately owned. A few castles are open to the public. Some of them are now operating as hotels. One of them you may want to visit is the Schloss Hallegg Castle.

Between the late 12th and the early 15th century, the Schloss Hallegg Castle was the property of Albrecht von Hallegg. The castle began as a fortress in 1198. It evolved into a Castle in the 16th century under Moritz and Viktor Welzer. The architectural style of the time was Renaissance. The Schloss Hallegg has the Italianate look with arcades and courtyards. One of the courtyards features a unique pentagonal arcade. Be sure to visit the Knight’s Hall with its Renaissance windows and Medieval weaponry on display. If possible, also visit the Castle Chapel. The frescoes are Baroque and by Georg Pfisterer, the court painter of Gurk. The Baroque Chapel is in the round tower of the Castle.
