The origins of castles in the Klagenfurt area usually note their use as a means of regional fortification. The Schloss St. Georgen am Sandhof, is no different. It began its life in this fashion. Schloss St. Georgen am Sandhof started off as a simple fortification structure in the 13th century.

In the 16th century, Hans Hausser or Hans Haussen undertook reconstruction of the Castle. You can see his mark, a stone bearing his insignia or coat of arms, within the St. Elisabeth Chapel. The stated date is 1584. Hans Hausser constructed the chapel. The Chapel, like the Castle, underwent renovations in both the 17th and 19th century. The altar dates from the middle of the 1600s. In the 17th century, the Schloss became the property of the Order of the Teutonic Knights. They extended the building. The Castle now conformed to a rectangular plan. An open arcade or loggia became part of its structure. In the 21st century, the Schloss acts as a hotel.
