The economic backbone of Carinthia and Klagenfurt is not simply farming. Klagenfurt acknowledges this contribution with a mining museum.

The Bergbaumuseum or Mining Museum is not in an old mine. Instead, the museum uses several old tunnels. The tunnels acted as air-raid shelters during the Second World War. You wander through the tunnels looking at the various exhibits. There are several well displayed and perfectly preserved minerals from Bad Bleiberg, the major lead mining center. You can also see and inspect some of the different types of mining equipment. These include different types of drills. The Mining Museum covers not only mineralogy and geology but also paleontology. They have a preserved dinosaur egg from China. After the tour, you can purchase related items at the museum shop.
