A museum does not have to be large in size to be immeasurably rich in content. Several museums though little, contain a wealth of material. This is true of at least one museum in Klagenfurt. This is the Diözezensanmuseum.

The Diocesan Museum (Diözezensanmuseum) naturally specializes in religious art. It contains a wide variety of different pieces. These range in time from the 12th or Middle Ages to the Baroque period before and around the 18th century. They come in all types and shapes. They represent all different types of medium. There are fine artwork and practical or applied artwork creations. You will find altarpieces, jewelry, painting, statuary, stained glass windows and tapestries. They hail from all the churches across the province, not just those in Klagenfurt. The two major jewels within this collection are the Magdalenschreibe and a processional cross. The processional cross is made of iron and bears slight traces of gilt. It dates from the 12th century, as does the Magdalenschreibe. The latter is from 1170 and Gurk. It is also the oldest piece of stained glass in Austria.
