The National Carinthia Museum is a well-organized and thought out presentation of history. Its focus is on the history of the Carinthia region as well as the city of Klagenfurt. Within its four walls, you will uncover an amazing amount of facts and interesting items related to the development and culture of the area. It is an excellent use of time if you find yourself in the city

You can begin with a look at the Furstein Throne. This “prince’s throne” is carved from the base of a Roman column in the village of Karnburg. Dukes used the Throne to confirm their authority in the area. Move on from here to the first floor and its display of geology, natural history and such items as fossils and stones. If this does not interest you, go straight to the second floor. Here, you can explore the Celtic and Hallstatt eras. There is the Roman period with its Dionysus mosaic, before you move into the development of Gothic paintings, including the altarpiece from St. Vitus. There is an ethnographic section with paper lanterns and demonic style masks from the festivals. Before you leave, be sure and look at the skeletal head bones of a “dragon” – the remains of a rhinoceros dating from the Ice Age, the supposed model for the Klagenfurt Dragon.
