Robert Musil (1880 – 1942) is one of Austria’s favorite writers. He is considered the country’s leading novelist of the 20th century. Musil died in 1942. He was born in Klagenfurt. He also spent the first 11 months of his life in a house on Bahnhofstrasse. The house is now a museum dedicated to him and several other Austrian literary greats.

The Robert Musil Museum of Literature utilizes family photos, texts and personal items to try to create a sense of his being in the house. They have on display his Underwood Standard Portable Typewriter, as well as several first editions of his writing. There are other mementos. The Museum also has a section of the house dedicated to Ingeborg Bachman (1921 – 1973). Born in Klagenfurt, she wrote essays and short stories. Many consider her a Liberal Heroine for her time. There are also exhibits on the poet Christine Lavant (1915 – 1973).
