Unlike many of its Austria’s universities, Klagenfurt University, today the Alps-Adriatic University of Klagenfurt, is not one with ancient roots. It is the youngest member of the post-secondary education system. Nevertheless, Klagenfurt University is the sixth largest of the general studies Universities. It is small but dynamic. It is the leading research and learning institution in the Carinthia region.

The Carinthian University Association began to put forth the idea of starting a university in the region in 1964. The first built premises specifically for the University of Klagenfurt appeared in 1971.Between 1973 and 1978 the University grew in leaps and bounds. It established various study programs and created academic courses. In 1975, it became the University for Education Studies. In 1993, it was the University of Klagenfurt. It now had a Faculty of Cultural Studies and a Faculty of Economics, business Administration and Informatics. Its current name, the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt, originated in 2004. In that year the University added another faculty, the Interuniversity Institution of Interdisciplinary Studies (IFF). This is the Third Faculty of the University.
