The small village of Ischgl is prominent for its world class ski resort. People arrive every year to enjoy the snowy slopes. Yet, the community does have a life without the skiers. It has a social and cultural existence that extends beyond the ski slopes. Part of its daily existence includes the religious and social life epitomized in the Chapel of St. Nicholas.

St. Nicholas chapel dates from 1443. It began life as a simple Gothic structure. Documents from the time detail its basic architecture and function within the community. The tall Gothic steeple with its tall thin spire, reaches high above the small village. This is typical of Gothic structures. Yet, like so many other churches, architectural styles change in tune with the times. Even in the remote village of Ischgl, the desire to have an up-to-date or fashionably designed church arrived in the 18th century. Between 1755 and 1757, builders redesigned the Chapel. It became a Baroque structure. Only the steeple retained Gothic. Inside, you can admire the unique stuccowork and ceiling frescoes, unusual for the period, but Baroque in nature.
