In 1999, a horrendous avalanche struck the Ischgl –Galtur region. Homes were destroyed; lives were lost forever. Rather than give up to the forces of nature, the community of Galtur decided to rebuild. The result of this immense rebuilding project was the Alpinarium. It opened to the public in 2003.

The Alpinarium serves many purposes. First and foremost, it is a memorial to those whose lives were lost and disrupted forever by the catastrophic avalanche. Next, it is a protective measure against the disaster reoccurring. The Alpinarium is a lengthy wall (345m or 1,132’) of concrete reinforced with steel. Yet, the Alpinarium is also a museum and a library. It is a concert center and a café. It also acts as an indoor training center for climbers. It has a climbing wall and an exhibition hall. You can learn about the region’s history, natural and historical. On Saturday mornings, you can visit the Bauernmarkt or Farmers’ Market set up just outside its doors.
