The building once was a burg. Yet, like so many of its kind, times and styles change. The magnificence of the structure, its architectural beauty, however, do not alter. The Hacklhaus in Leoben in Styria, Austria, is the perfect example of 17th century elegance. It graces the Hauptplaz with its glittering red, some say maroon, and cream façade. The entire building demands you pay it proper attention. The additions of the mid-19th century have done it no harm. In fact, the architecture embraced the embellishments.

The façade of the Hacklhaus is Baroque. The 1660 stuccowork is an alluring depiction of female allegorical representations of the four seasons and Christian Virtues. Johann Max Fendler further contributed with his wall paintings in 1851 to 1852. These are all Mining and Hunting Scenes. These motifs adorn the stairway walls. The statuary, strategically placed, is all from the Baroque period. Lovingly created and placed these elements add further to its charm.
