The Alter Dom or Old Cathedral is a familiar sight in Linz. You notice first its twin towers and it somewhat green color. Anton Bruckner was organist in the Old Cathedral from 1855 to 1868. He had the organ – built by Franz Xavier Krismann, modified before he would play it. The Alter Dom was also the most important church in town until the construction of the Neuer Dom (New Cathedral) in the late 19th century.

The Old Cathedral dates from the 1670s. For the architect, Pietro Francesco Carlone, it was a task lasting several years. (1669-1678). The Jesuits called it theirs until 1773. They regained it back in 1909, only after work was completed on the Neuer Dom. Inside, you can see the single nave’s fine barrel-vaulted ceiling. The exquisitely carved choir stalls feature a number of somewhat grotesque cherubs. On the wall, gold-braided drapery hangs from the hands of 18 angelic beings. The white stuccowork makes and excellent contrast to the pulpit with its gold and black hues. Above the high altar is an Assumption by Antonio Belluci. The altarpiece by Bartolomeo Altomonte portrays St. Aloysius.
