In 1286, a Gothic church rose on pfarrplatz. This became the stadtpfarrkirche or Parish church. The entryway, for example, has cross-ribbed vaulting, as do the steps to the tower. The current three-nave church, however, dates from the 17th century. In 1648, the church underwent remodeling, adopting the new Baroque architectural fashion.

The new Basilica retains a few of the older Gothic features but is structured along Baroque lines. The overall interior owes its Baroque character and gild to Hildebrandt. Of particular interest is the marble covered chapel in the southwest corner of the church. This is the Chapel of St. John Nepomuk. The statue and trompe l’oeil work in the choir are created by Georg Raphael Donner. These date from 1727. The ceiling frescoes of the church are by Bartolomeo Altomonte. If you can have time, be sure to see the high altar. It comes from the busy and creative hands of Matthias Krinner and Kaspar Modler. The altarpiece , the Assumprion, is by Karl von Reslfeld.
