In the northeastern Modling district of Austria, you will find the town of Hinterbruhl. Just 4,000 people live in the village, where you can find a discount hotel in Hinterbruhl in order to enjoy the less touristy feeling of this small Austrian village. The main attraction of the village is the Seegrotte, a series of caves and caverns that include the largest underground lake in all of Europe. But the caves have a darker history as well. During World War II, the caves served as a location for part of the Mauthausen concentration camp.
Much of the activity you’ll participate in when you are staying in your budget hotel in Hinterbruhl will be outdoors. Besides the caves, you can enjoy the forests and fields in the area that are great for hiking. With Salzburg so nearby, you will certainly be able to make an easy day trip or two to this historic city. In line with the music traditions of the region, Hinterbruhl is also a location of the Franz Schubert Music School. For some curious architecture, take a walk along the old city wall and see how some of the buildings are actually built into the base. Then visit the Hinterbruhl Cathedral where you can attend Mass if you’d like.
