Hotels near Semmering Railway - Best deals & budget rates!

If you decide to travel to the Semmering region, you might want to try something different. You could fly into the area. You could also drive a car. One of the more popular ways of making your way through the Semmering Pass, however, is by taking the Semmeringbahn. This is the old Semmering Railway. It was Austria and Europe’s first major true Alpine or mountain railway. Building this railway helped to open-up the region for tourism.

Karl von Ghega (1802-1860) constructed the railway between 1848 and 1854. The route cuts through mountains creating 15 tunnels. It also passes over several valleys and gorges. It does so using 16 viaducts. The result is a breathtaking journey. There are the tips of mountains, the depths of gorges and the darkness of tunnels for you to experience. You can catch the Semmeringbahn at Gloggnitz or at Semmering. The journey ends at Mürzzuschlag. The Semmering Railway is now on the UNESCO World Heritage Site (1998).
