When you arrive in the Tyrol, you soon discover the closeness of Germany. It is only a border away. If you happen to be in Biberwier, Austria, you might want to take an excursion to visit several fortifications and castles that lie close to the borderlines. These include the famous Ehrenberg ruins.

The Ehrenberg Ruins symbolize 800 years of history. These massive remains date from the 13th century. They saw the fighting between Catholics and Protestants come and go. Saxony, Bavaria and the Russian Tsarevitch Alexander all found a use for its protective walls. You can only reach it by walking or hiking up and through a series of fortifications, including some 18th century ramparts. There is a recently restored turret for you to view. In here, defenders had an excellent view of the enemy and could fire upon them using their large cannon. Climb further to visit the actual castle remains. If you have time, visit the museum on it in Reutte or time your visit to see some local re-enactments.
