Among the immense fortifications against invaders, the Ehrenberg was the most important. There were, however, other forts acting with Ehrenberg as part of an intricate defense system stretching along the mountain peaks overlooking the valley below. After the fall of Ehrenberg in 1703 to the Bavarians, another strategic fort was added to reinforce the borders. This is Schlosskopf.

To reach Castle Head of Schlosskopf, you will need to climb. It is a good hike up a steep slope beyond Ehrenberg. From this vantage point, in fact, you look down on the ruins of Ehrenberg. This structure, however, rose as a modern-style fort in 1740. Its intent was to withstand even the most modern artillery and forces. Years have not been kind to this once massive fortification. Today, however, you can begin to see what the Castle looked like during its peak years. You can enjoy an exhibit on the history and reconstruction of the castle – the restorations used only original-type means of building materials and tools for the reconstruction process.
