Herbert von Karajan was, undoubtedly, one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century. He was born in Salzburg, Austria on April 5, 1908. He maintained a residence in nearby Anif. It was there, on July 16, 1989, he passed away from a heart attack. At the time, he was working on "Un ballo in Maschera" by Verdi for the opening of the Salzburg Festival. His grave lies in the parish church of Anif.

The work of von Karajan remains the greatest testimonial to his memory. In 2001, the town decided to commemorate and honor the man. A memorial statue was placed near where he lies buried. The artist chosen by the town councilors was the admired and respected Anna Chromy. She executed a simple bronze portrait, not a complete statue of the man. You can locate the portrait of Herbert von Karajan in front of the churchyard in Anif.
