It is not a grand church. It is not overbearing. It has its charm, but the reason for visiting it has little to do with its architecture. You may want to visit the small church in Anif for one reason. It is the final resting place for the renowned conductor Herbert von Karajan.

Von Karajan was born in Salzburg, near Anif, in April 1908. He made his first appearance in that city playing piano. The Salzburg Festival also heralded his first official appearance there as a performer in 1933. By 1928, he was conducting orchestras, starting small. By the 1930s, his reputation and his drive had pushed him further up the ladder. In the 1960s and 1970s he was founding and artistic director of his own music festivals in Salzburg. These included the Salzburg Easter Festival and the Salzburg Whitsun concerts. Yet, he did not die in Salzburg. His death took place in his home in Anif. His tomb, marked by a simple iron cross, is in the cemetery of Anif Church.
