The subterranean Almkanal winds it way under the surface of Salzburg in the Universitätsplatz in the old quarter of the city of Salzburgg. It is the result of work an engineering task begun in 1137. The canal system bringing fresh water into Salzburg had to dig through rocks and tunnel through adverse conditions. The work was arduous and challenging. The route ran from Bechstesgarten through the Münchsberg mountain.

The district of St. Peter with its millstones and people required the water. They needed fresh drinking water. They wanted it as a protection against fire. They also needed it to power local factories. In fact, into the 19th century, Salzburg had around 100 waterwheels operating from water brought by the canal. The city also used the Alkanal water for another use. They cleaned the streets with it. Water from the canal was released to flood the Getreidegasse washing away all the dirt and grime into the Salzach River. Today, you can sit and watch the fountain in Universitätsplatz. The Fountain of Neptune riding a “sea horse” is powered by water from the Almkanal.
