The beautiful Schloss Hellbrunn is not so much a palace as a large three-storey manor house. Built between the years 1613 and 1615, it acted as the summer residence for Archbishop Markus Sitkus. The style is Baroque at the hands of Santino Solari. He also created a grotto-fountain under the front staircase. The interior décor is by Arsenio Mascagni. Most notable are the Prince’s Chambers and the Ball Room (Festaal).

Yet, one of the major reasons people come to the Hellbrunn is to see the gardens. These include the Pleasure Gardens dating from the 17th century. Stop and admire the main pool. It has an island in its midst. Two smaller ponds flank it. Yet, you will probably want to spend more time admiring the Wasserspiele. The water fountains of Schloss Hellbrunn are special. Two of the most admired are the Neptune Fountain and Roman Theater. The Archbishop would dine with invited guests at an outdoor table. The mechanism beneath the table could be activated to unleash a water show. You can also see the remarkable theatre – all figures powered by water. Built between 1749 and 1752, the “show” contains 138 wooden figures, all water-powered.
