The massive Hohensalzburg Fortress is one of Salzburg’s major tourist attractions. It glowers down on the city from Festungberg hill. Below it stretches the city and the Salzach River. The man behind its construction was Prince Gebhard I of Helffenstein. His exile in 1085 left expansion and further developments of the Fortress to his successors. Under Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach, in the 16th century, the Fortress adopted its present look. The Hohensalzburg faced further development under Archbishop Paris Lodron. The massive complex became a military barracks in the 19th century.

In the 20th century, the Fortress has become a tourist attraction of grand proportions. Some come to admire the architecture. Through the Glocekenturm, you can reach the residential quarters. The Bell case is by Hans Reichart (1501). They wander through the Golden Stube (Golden Chamber) with its richly ornate décor and furnishings. Some prefer to gain entry to the macabre Reckturm or corner tower, once a torture chamber. St. George’s Chapel is an exquisite example of the late Gothic style. Some people come to enjoy the view. If you time your visit correctly, you can enjoy one of the special events that bring the whole period to life.
