There are many places to attend festival performance in Salzburg. The Large or Great Festival Hall (Grosse Festspielhaus) is part of the Festival Hall Complex in Salzburg. Unlike two other venues part of the Festival Hall Complex - the older Rocky Riding School Hall and the Small Festival Hall, the Large Festival Hall is a “new” building. It only dates from the period 1956 to 1960.

The design of the Large Festival Hall is from the very capable hands of Professor Clemens Holzmeister. The orchestra pit, however, comes from the mind of Richard Peduzzi. Like the Almkanal, this job required sophisticated engineering skills. The intent was to blast a theatre out of the rock face of the Mönchsberg mountain. The job required the removal of some 55,000 cubic meters of stone. In the end, the result was a 100 meter-wide stage, nicknamed the “Wagner Stage.” It size places it among the largest in the world. There is seating for 2,177. Opening night for the Large Festival Stage took place in 1960. Since then, it has been the site of several concerts, ballet performances and opera presentations. It is now an integral part of the festival season in Salzburg.
