Some people enjoy puppet shows. For them, a Punch-and-Judy show is sublime. Some prefer the more sophisticated approach of puppetry using marionettes. The world’s greatest marionette theater is in Salzburg. The Salzburg Marionettetheater has been entertaining people since 1913. You can locate it in a small building on Schwartzstrasse.

The building housing the Marinette Theater is a Baroque-Rococo concoction with fine acoustics. It became home to the theater in 1913 when Anton Aicher, a sculptor, opened it for performances for children. In its early stages, it acted as a venue for children’s fairy tales. Today, it has altered its course. It has become a theater specializing in light operas, operetta and ballets. The focus is on works created by composers and writers in Salzburg, or, at least, on material associated with the city. As a result, you can catch marionettes performing various works by the master, himself, Mozart.
