The beauty that is Schloss Mirabell began as a small mansion in 1606. The Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau instructed its construction. It was to be a gift for his beloved mistress, Salome Alt. He adored her so much, he even had the workmen include an indoor, private bath for her use. The Archbishop’s successor was Markus Sittikus von Hohenems. From him, comes the present name of Mirabell.

The present Miraqbell owes some of its current features to the 18th century work by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt. He remodeled the Palace in 1727 on the orders of the Archbishop Franz Anton Harrach. Much of this building was lost in a fire in 1818. Fortunately, some fragments of the 18th century incarnation remain. Be sure to look at the sculptures for the Angel Staircase by Georg Raphael Donner and wander through the Marble Hall from this earlier time. Following the fire, Peter von Nobile set to work creating the current Mirabell. Step outside the Palace and wander the gardens by Johann Bernard Fischer von Erlach. People are often fascinated by the elementals designed by Ottavio Moste and the weird but wonderful Zwerglgarten or Dwarves Garden opposite the Pegasus Fountain.
