You can identify the Franciscan Church (Franziskanerkirche) by its tall, graceful spire. The building has old roots, tracing back to Romanesque and Gothic origins. You can see it in its portal, nave and the Romanesque stone lions in the steps leading up to the pulpit. Although much of the building is Baroque, the Franciscan Church still maintains an air of times further past. The new architectural style did not seem to take hold or overwhelm the older styles. You remember such things as the 13th century portal leading to the Presbytery with its figure of Christ Enthroned flanked by St. Rupert and St. Peter.

Hans von Burghausen remodeled the church in the 15th century. He is responsible for the choir. The new altar is the product of the prolific Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. He retained the central Madonna statue of the earlier altar by Michael Pachter. In the St. Francis Chapel, you can see frescoes by John Michael Rottmayr. They are scenes from the life of St. Francis.
