The Church of the Holy Trinity or Dreifaltigkeitskirche stands as one structure of several buildings, including St. Vergil’s College and the Seminary. The church is an early work of the great Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. His signature is seen in buildings throughout Salzburg. He had returned recently from Italy when he undertook this project.

The church structure dates from the period of 1694 to 1702. The Italian influence is obvious in the Holy Trinity Church. The façade is reminiscent of the Italian architect Borromini’s Sant’Agnese Church in Rome. The dual towers flank the concave façade. Of particular interest are the sculptures on the exterior. These include allegorical representations of Love, hope and the church by Michael B. Mandel. Inside, take time to admire one of the most spectacular characteristics of this church, the oval-shaped dome vault frescoes. These are the work of another notable artist, Johann Michael Rottmayr. His subject is the Coronation of the Virgin Mary with the Holy Trinity.
