Salzburg has been home to several monasteries over the centuries. One of them is Stift St. Peter, dating from the 7th century. This Benedictine Abbey, by the church of St. Rupert, has both 12th and 13th century buildings. Within this complex of buildings, you can locate a fine church. This is St. Peter’s Church.

St. Peter’s Church has 12th century origins and underwent 17th and 18th century remodeling. Within, you will find a treasury of fine artwork. Stop and examine the various sumptuous Baroque works and furnishings. These include some 15 side altars. The organ is from the 17th century. Kremser Schmidt created the Baroque altar paintings. Amidst the ornate is the more simple but effective remnants of the church’s Gothic and Romanesque heritage. The porch has Romanesque vaulted arches. There is also a beautifully rendered 15th century Madonna. As is the case with many Salzburg Churches, Mozart played here. He premiered hi Mass in C Minor in St. Peter’s. His wife, Constanze, sang the lead soprano role.
