The Kollegienckirche or University Church derives its name from its usage. It was part of the Benedictine University. Although the university was founded in 1623, the Church was not consecrated until 1707. Many consider it to be one of the finest Baroque structures in Austria.

The architect of the University Church was the celebrated genius, Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. He took a simple structure and created a light show of intriguing design. The windows of this church are not uniform. They are in different shapes. This allows the entry of natural light to create a unique effect inside the church. Within the structure, you have works by other renowned artists. The side alt paintings are by Johann Michael Rottmayr. The stuccowork created by Italian artisans follows a design by Erlach. The ornate main altarpiece has winged figures symbolizing the various arts and sciences. There are representatives of Architecture, Law, Medicine, Music, Painting, Poetry, Philosophy, and Theology.
