Salzburg, as a major city in Austria, has a complete health system. Actually, it is one of the few hospitals in the country to have more than 1,000 beds for its patients. In Austria, only nine hospitals have this amount of patient space. Most hospitals have less than 800 beds.

The hospital in Salzburg is the Landeskrankenhaus Salzburg (LKH). It has 1,300 beds. It also offers 24-hour emergency services. It began as a small facility in 1695 under the name St. Johann’s Hospital. During the early 1900s, the father of the famous conductor, Herbert von Karajan, worked, here, specializing in goiters. The services of the Landeskranenhaus Hospital are far reaching. They include pediatrics, optometry, gynecology, urology dermatology, internal medicine and orthopedics. It also looks at problems in the fields of cardiology and has areas dealing with rehabilitation and physiotherapy. As is with the case of most hospitals in Austria, the treatment and facilities in the Salzburg Landeskrankenhaus are technologically and socially modern.
