The history museum, Carolino Augusteum, is one of the city of Salzburg’s treasures. The founder was Maria Vinzenz Süss, an amateur collector who donated his own personal collection to the city. The museum has been in operation since 1834. In 1850, the Bavarian Princess Caroline Augusta, widow of the Emperor Franz, took over taking care of the collection. The name, Carolino Augusto, pays homage to her efforts.

Today, the museum has a collection spanning the eras from prehistoric times to the present. It contains prize pieces from the Celtic and Roman eras, including a Celtic pitcher from Dümberg and a Bronze Age helmet from the Lueg Pass. There are displays of the Roman sojourn in Salzburg. You can see fragments of mosaic tiles. There is affine one showing scenes from the abduction of Europa. The museum also has exhibits of coins, local handicrafts and musical instruments. It has a fine collection of Baroque paintings. Representative work consists of paintings by Paul Trogers and Johann Michael Rottmayr as well as pieces by a local artist, Hans Markt.
