The Residenzgalerie (Residenz Gallery) began to collect paintings for its exhibits in 1923. Its original aims were to replace the missing works of the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg, open the works for study purposes and to increase tourism to the city. The building selected was a natural fit. It had been the home of the Prince-Archbishops. In fact, it was in the East Wing, home of the Residenzgalerie, that Archbishop Hieronymous Count Collored first displayed the Archiepiscopal Collection in the late 1700s. Today, the Gallery hosts both temporary and permanent displays of art.

The Residenz is worth visiting for the overall interior décor by Lukas von Hildebrandt. The artists contributing individual paintings include Johann Michale Rottmayr and Martino Altomonte. Yet, the real reason people go to the Residenz Gallery is to view the collection of paintings. This museum contains paintings from the 16th to the 19th century, but focuses on those from the 17th. The 17th century collection includes Dutch, Flemish, French, Italian and, of course, Austrian painters. There is work from Peter Paul Rubens, Rembrandt, Francois Boucher, Bernard Strozzi and Kaspar Memberger the Elder. There is also an exhibit on Austrian painters from the 19th century.
