In the 19th century, Bad Gastein was famous for its curing waters. The arrival of the railroad made this possible. People came from across the region and the larger cities to visit the many spas. The composer Schubert came to “take the waters.” Today, many of the early spas are part of the town’s past life. Yet, there is still a spa complex offering you the same services and more in Bad Gastein.

The Felsentherme Gastein, or Gastein Thermal Springs, is a spa complex. The purpose of it is to reenergize you and cure you. The waters, as Madame Cure discovered after testing them, contains radon. These minute amounts of the radioactive substance are considered beneficial for some skin disorders and bone or muscle problems. Using high heat and even higher humidity, the spa treats such things as arthritis and respiratory problems. The waters are also said to be beneficial in cases of certain skin disorders.
