The small church of St. Nicholas, Nicholaikirche, is in Bad Gastein. It is the oldest religious structure in the Gastein Valley. As such, it deserves more than a fast glance. Yet, you should also visit this small church to admire its architectural and artistic merits.

The Church of St. Nicholas is a product of both the 14th and 15th centuries. It displays elements from both periods of architectural development. As you enter the interior, look up at the vaulted ceiling. At the same time, notice only a single pillar supports the roof of the rather short nave. This is a singular feature. On the nave you can locate evidence of the 15th century. There is the vibrant Judgment Day showing Christ rescuing Adam and Eve from the realm of Hell. This fresco and one of Cavalry are by the Master of Schröder. If you look at the north side of the choir, you can also see a faded fresco of St. Nicholas. As you walk along the uneven flagstone floor, it might humble you to know the material is local, hailing from nearby Böckstein. The pulpit is of green serpentine stone from Luggau.
