The story of many a small town lies hidden away in the museum. You go to a museum if you want to find out the background of a city or town. You wander through a museum if you wish to get a feel for the social context of a community. You also visit a museum if you wish to connect with the economic, social and cultural background of a community and its region. You can do all this and more by entering the Bad Gastein Museum founded in 1936.

The Gasteiner Museum is a place where the role of the landscape is prominent in its displays. It devotes substantial space and effort in explaining the geology of the region. There is information on geology, mineralogy and mining. There are costumes from the Perchten Festival and phots of famous visitors including Goebbels (1938). There are also many landscape paintings. These are from the 19th century. They are by two major court artists of the time, Matthäus Loder and Thomas Ender. Both men were under the patronage of the Archduke Johann of Austria. You can also browse through documents of historical merit and learn about the history of the spas that made the town famous and wealthy during the 19th century
