In the middle of quiet Dorfgstein, you will find an unusual structure. It is one of the major landmarks within the town. It does not tower above the village. It simply makes its presence felt. This is the Römerturm.

You can translate the word “Römerturm” in a number of ways. Literally, it means the Tower of the Romans. This may refer to its historic basis. In all probablity, the Tower sits on the site of an earlier structure used by the Romans during their settlement of the region. They stayed in the Gastein Valley around 2,500 years ago. A tower made excellent sense in those days. It would protect the settlement, guard the trade route and act as a watchtower. The current tower, however, dates only from 1340. Whatever the meaning behind the name, you can not only enjoy the ancient structure, but also a drink as well. The Tower is home to a modern bar.
