The Carmelite Church in Sankt (Saint) Pölten was once part of a larger complex. The Carmelite Monastery (Karmeliterhof) was constructed in 1707 in the village. However, by 1782, the monastery had dissolved. Only the church remains a testimony to the desire of the Princess Maria Antonia Josepha Montecuccoli.

You can reach the Carmelite Church by wandering towards the southwest part of town, along the Rathausplatz. Eventually, you will reach the Carmelite Church. Martin Wittwere is the initial architect of the project. He created the design for others to follow. Construction on the church dates from 1708 to 1712. The architect for this facet was Jakob Prandtauer (1658-1721), hence its other name, the Prandtauerkitche. Prandtauer, an Austrian Baroque master, built the church and the convent, as well as other religious structure in the town. He is responsible for a more ornate, High Baroque or Rococo interior. Matthias Stein also contributed to the remodeling. The high altar is possibly by Lukas von Hildebrandt.
