The Rathaus in Sankt Pölten is not in any one particular architectural style. This is the problem when different buildings are joined together and then overlaid with still more architectural changes. Over the years, changes have created a hodgepodge of recognizable eras. The façade is Baroque. The Tower, by Joseph Munggenast is a Renaissance structure from 1727. The south side tower, octagonal in shape, dates from a previous period – an earlier time when two Gothic structures united to create the first Rathaus. The building also has Renaissance inscriptions and gothic niches. If you enter inside, make sure you visit the Mayor’s office. Here, you will find a Baroque Stucco “Emperor” ceiling from 1722. It derives its name from the portraits of 12 Hapsburg Emperors that grace its ceiling.
