St. (Sankt) Pölten is the seat of the region’s Diocese. They have their offices is a former monastery. The Augustine Monastery structure dates from the mid-17th century. After the dissolution of the monasteries in 1784, its work fell into the hands of the local diocese. The result is both a Cathedral and a Diocese Museum.

If you find the former Augustinian Monastery, locate the cloister yard. Climb the stairs to the second floor overlooking these yards and you are in the museum. The museum dates from 1888. It began in the previous Augustinian Library then extended until it has taken over other parts of the former monastery buildings. It is now home to a collection of sculptures, paintings, decorative art objects and other religious art and artefacts from both the Gothic and Baroque eras. Some originally could be found in the Cathedral. You can also see coins, historical documents and medals in the collection.
