Synagogues in Lower Austria suffered the same fate of others across the country. The expulsion of the Jew in the 17th century caused many places of worship to fall into ruins. After Kristallnacht (the Night of Glass) in November 1938, many synagogues closed, never to open again. The Synagogue in Sankt (St.) Pölten managed to survive the disastrous treatment of the Jews. In fact, it is the only Jewish synagogue left in Lower Austria.

The Ehmalige Synagogue is a thing of beauty. Although the events of Krystallnacht damaged the structure, it is now restored. The Synagogue dates back to 1911. Until then, the Jews were not able to purchase land to construct a place of worship. The Jewish people had lived in Sank Pölten since at least the 14th century. They were expelled in 1638 and refused admittance to the city until the 19th century. The Museum within this former Synagogue opened in 1984. It records the history and culture of the Austrian Jews. Notice the rich ornamentation of Wiener Werkstätte designs.
