Austria is a land of ice and snow. High in the mountains the largest of the peaks is Grossglocker Mountain. It looms over the landscape. At its foot, is the small village of Heiligenblut. Not far from this mountain village, in the valley, is a symbol of the age, of the passing of time and of the power of snow and ice. This is the glacier the Pasterze.

In all of Austria, you cannot find a longer glacier. It is also the longest glacier in the Eastern Alps. You can reach it from the Grossglockner Pass if you go by way of the road. You can also get to it by boarding the Gletscherbahn or glacier railway. You may catch this at Franz-Josefs-Hohe. Remember, if you decide to take a trip to the glacier, dress warmly. The temperature at the glacier’s crevassed surface is Arctic cold. Dress warmly and you will be able to stand in awe and wander over its surface.
