The story of the Church in Heiligenblut is one of the crusades. It is a tale of mystery and faith. Accodring to legend, a Danish knight, Briccus, returning from the Crusades, brought a vial of the Holy Blood of Christ to the small village. The Church sprung up in 1490 in response to the village at the foot of the Grossglockner Mountain becoming a pilgrimage destination. The pfarrkirche St. Vinzenz mit Bergsteigerdenkmal is an elegant Gothic structure. Its interior is renowned for its containment of a magnificent polychrome altar. The late Gothic altarpiece by Wolfgang Asslinger and Marx Reichlich dates from 1520. It is executed in the style of Michael Pacher. At 10.6 meters high, it is the largest surviving example of this kind of work in Austria. The altar wings depict the Coronation of the Virgin below Christ and several Martyr figures. In all, there are 12 painted panels to admire. You should also visit the sacramental holder in the Choir from 1494 and the 1491 Veronica Altar in the north aisle. This work is probably by Luke Tausmann.
