The original Burgtheater dates from before1874. Between 1874 and 1888, the structure was in the style of the Italian Renaissance. The work was by Karl von Hasenaur and Gottfried Semper. In 1897, there were a number of refurbishments required to update the theater. As a thriving theater entity, the Burgtheater continuously required improvements in acoustics, wiring and other necessary. This reached new heights after the devastating effects of a fire in 1945.

When World War II ended, only the side wings with their grand staircases remained intact. Between 1952 and 1955, an immense and complete reconstruction of the theater restored its former glory. The grand staircases remain the theaters centerpiece. Mirror duplicates of each other, they sweep upwards to the boxed seats, a ripple of marble enhanced with candelabra. The ceilings above bear the works of Frank Matsch and Gustav Klimt. The curved foyer is 60 meters (200’) long. You can see looking down at you, the busts of famous playwrights. Many of them still have their works performed here, today.
