If you wander along Wipplinger Strasse, you are going to come across a rather somber looking structure. This palace acted as the Town Hall or Rathaus up until 1885. The building formerly was a palace. Although it is from the 1200s, the façade is from the Baroque period of the 18th century. Today, you can visit this Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus) for two main reasons: to admire the 18th century fountain and to see the Archives of the Austrian Resistance.
The bronze Andromeda Fountain is the work of Georg Raphael Donner. It depicts the myth of Andromeda and her struggle to escape the sea dragon. You can see it in the courtyard. Inside, you will find the Archives of the Austrian Resistance. This is a permanent exhibit on the Austrian anti-Fascist resistance movement. While focusing on the struggle against the Nazis - resulting in some 2,700 executions and thousands murdered, the displays also look at the movement during the turbulent 1930s. It is a moving memorial and reminder of the legacy of World War II.
