The Schoenbrunn Palace is aptly named. It is beautiful and well, or at least well proportioned and placed. It is also ostentatious and often overwhelming. It was the former summer residence of the Imperial Family. It was the place, theoretically, where they went to get away from all the overbearing responsibilities and activities of court. The work is by the great Baroque architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. He completed his task in 1695.

Maria Theresa called for adaptations and further work in the mid 18th century. She used Nikolaus Pacassi. The Palace remains Baroque but inside there are greater tendencies towards the Rococo. In the State Rooms the shade, white paneling dominates displayed within a gilded framework. OF particular interest to visitors is the round Chinese Cabinet with a table that could be drawn up and down via the floor. There are also the Blue Staircase, the Blue Chinese Salon, the Vieux- Laque Room, the Porcelain room, the Great Gallery and the Napoleon Room. IF you have time and energy, visit the gardens. Here, you will find a maze a zoo the Palm House and the Neptune Fountain (Franz Anton Zauner, 1780).
