After you arrive in Austria, you will find it necessary to find a means of transportation around the country. While you can rent a car, in Europe, the most common means is by train. In Vienna, the capital city, you will have a choice between three major train stations. Each one serves a specific purpose.
Anyone coming from the west arrives at the Wien Westbahnhof – the Vienna Western Train station. It is a hauptbanhofen or main train station. It is also the second largest after Wien Südbahnhof. All trains from the west, including locally from Salzburg in West Austria, and internationally from Germany, France and Switzerland, drop off their passengers here. You can catch trains from here to many points to the West or a local tram or underground train. The train types are EC (EuroCity) and IC (InnerCity). They can be DC (Express) or slower. Vienna is part of the central hub of Austria. Its station offers travelers a wide variety of amenities to make a stopover a pleasant event. There are ATMs, coffee shops and even a grocery store.
