If you are looking for something different and happen to be touring in Carinthia, you might want to explore a mine. The region is home to several salt and gold mines. One of them is near Bad Bleiberg. It is a former working mine now become a showpiece for tourists. It is an excellent and fun way to discover the past of a region.

Terra Mystica is located 2 km from Bad Bleiberg. It is an amusement park and history museum combined. You start the tour off with a video about the mine’s history before sliding down an old wooden shaft into the bowls of the earth. On the walls of the mine, you see the projections of images. Together with sound, they interpret the origins of the earth. You hear tales of the origins of earth, man’s relationship to it and of St. Barbara – the Patron Saint of miners. You can also learn about the creatures who dwell in the dark – dwarves and knockers. A small museum on the surface displays ceremonial mining outfits and shows diagrams of the workings of the mine. Children can take part in a separate tour. It allows them to actually use a chisel and hammer down in the mine.
