High on a craggy hilltop over the Faakersee sits the ruins of the Finkelstein Castle. This Schloss was once home to the powerful Finkelstein family. In the 12th century, they created a fortress on this site. It remained in their hands until the last of the line passed away. The Hapsburgs then took control of the castle and its territory.

The Emperor Maximilian I sold the Castle in 1512. The new owner was his finance minister, Sigmund von Diedrichstein. He remained here for some. Today, however, the castle is a mere shell of its original self. You can visit the ruins. The views are magnificent from this site of the town and the Drautal. You can see clear across the valley to castles on the other side. If you visit the Finkenstein Castle ruins, you might want to time it to coincide it with a concert at the nearby Burgarena Finkenstein
