What you need to know before traveling to Völkermarkt

The town of Volkermarkt (Volko’s Market) is in the eastern Carinthia region of Austria, 16 miles (25 kilometers) east of Klagenfurt. It is located on a terrace above the Drau River, which has been dammed to form a thirteen-mile-long (21 kilometers) artificial lake. The community was founded in AD 1100, and in its long history it has been fought over many times.

Guests staying in budget hotels in Volkermarkt can visit several interesting sites. The tower of the 12th century Romanesque Church of St. Rupert still rises above the town. The Kirche St. Magdalena (Church of Mary Magdalene) was built in the 13th century and altered in the 15th century. The beautiful west portal of this church is Late Romanesque, but the interior is Late Gothic. It has some lovely 14th century frescoes. Be sure to see the 15th century pieta. On the town square you can see houses with attractive Biedermeier facades. The town hall is Late Gothic, and the local administrative center is in a former ducal palace. At nearby Griffen there are caves that were once used by Stone Age people and were found to be full of bones from extinct prehistoric animals.
