A common gift or souvenir to take home from Austria is ceramics. If you have ever wondered how they manufacture ceramics in Austria, you can go to Gmunden. Here, you can visit one of Europe’s largest hand crafted ceramic producers. This is Gmundner Keramik Manufaktur GmbH.

The factory of Gmunden Cermaics (Gmudener Kermik) has an output of some 10,000 pieces each day. The factory began as the economic venture of Franz Emile Schleiss in 1893. His son, Leopold Schleiss, started the Gmunden Earthenware Factory in 1903. The focus was on artistic Ceramic art, particularly between 1913 and 1923 when Gmunden became a summer haven for artists. In 1923, the company changed hands. It was to do so several times until the late 1960s. Johannnes Hohenberg purchased it in 1968. He altered the focus to include tableware. Finally, in 1997, Johannes, Duke of Moy, took over the company. Today, you can wander the site and watch the potters at work. You may even be able to paint your own ceramic pot. The factory also has an outlet shop from which you can purchase products.
