The Parish church of Gmunden has two dedications. It is the Church of the Virgin Mary. It is also the church of the Three Wisemen, Kings or Magi. The evidence of this duo-allegiance is evident in the interior of the church. The exterior, however, reflects little of its Gothic origins. It is a mainly Baroque remodeling from the 18th century.
Inside the Church of the Virgin Mary and the Three Magi, there is a ceramic Madonna. This is a reflection of the city as being a major producer of ceramics. The carving of the Three Kings, also on the main altarpiece, is by Thomas Schwanthaler. Two other figures, St. Elizabeth and St. Zaharias, are by Michael Zürn. If you can time your visit for Epiphany Eve, you will see an unusual sight. The statue of the Three Magi leaves the Church. It sails along a barge on the river Traun to Gmunden. Villagers then carry it from there in a procession to the church.
